Fostering Cats: Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does fostering a cat involve?
Fostering means temporarily caring for a cat in your home until they’re adopted. You’ll provide love, basic care, and sometimes help with socialization or recovery. We handle the veterinary costs—you provide the heart and home.
2. How long will I have the foster cat?
It depends! Some cats are adopted quickly, while others—especially seniors or special-needs kitties—may need longer. We’ll work with your availability and comfort level when matching you with a foster. See also #7 below.
3. What does Marlee’s Misfits provide?
We provide starter supplies (food and litter) and all veterinary care and medications. You’ll always have our support—we’re just a text or call away.
4. What if I already have pets?
That’s okay! Many of our fosters have pets. We’ll only match you with cats who are a good match for your home.
5. Can I foster if I’ve never had a cat before?
Absolutely. We welcome first-time fosters and provide guidance every step of the way. No experience required—just patience and compassion.
6. What if I need to go out of town?
Let us know in advance, and we’ll arrange coverage or move the cat to another foster home. Flexibility and communication are key.
7. What if I fall in love and want to adopt my foster cat?
That’s called a “foster fail,” and it’s a win in our book! If it’s a great match, we’re thrilled to make it official.
8. What happens if the foster cat gets sick or injured?
Contact us right away. We cover veterinary costs and will direct you to one of our trusted partner vets. You’re never alone in an emergency.
9. Do I need to train or socialize the cat?
Sometimes, yes—especially with shy or special-needs cats. We’ll guide you through it and match you with a cat that fits your comfort level. Your love and patience make a huge difference.
10. How do adoptions work? Do I have to find a home for the cat?
Nope—we handle that part. You’ll just keep the cat safe and happy while we screen adopters and coordinate meet-and-greets.
